From Hearth to Heart a few basic safety tips

- Carbon Monoxide Detectors should be on every level of your home
- Carbon Monoxide
is colorless, odorless tasteless and Highly Toxic
- Carbon Monoxide alarms should
be tested the same as smoke detectors
Keep Fireplaces and Wood stoves Clean
- Have your
chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a chimney specialist
- Clear
area around the hearth of debris, decorations, flammable materials keep at
least 3 feet of clearance
- Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures.
Never use flammable liquids to start a fire
- Use
only seasoned hardwood
- Never burn cardboard, trash or debris in your fireplace or
wood stove
Protect the outside of your house
- Stack firewood
outdoors at least 30 feet from your house
- Remove branches hanging above chimney,
flues or vents
